National Provider Identifier (NPI):
As many of you are aware, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have implemented a new identifier for use in electronic health care transactions. The National Provider Identifier (NPI) will replace the separate provider identifiers you currently use for each health plan, as well as replace all legacy provider numbers (e.g. UPIN, Medicaid Provider Number, Medicare Provider Number, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield Numbers) in standard transactions as of May 23, 2007. While May 2007 may seem far away, it will quickly be here and your practice will want to be sure that your NPI is obtained as it could affect your future marketability. There are two easy ways in which you may apply for an NPI:

  • Electronically (preferred): Apply free of charge through an easy web-based application process by visiting www.nppes.cms.hhs.gov/nppes. You'll receive your number within five business days.
  • By Paper: A copy of the application, including the mailing address is available on www.nppes.cms.hhs.gov or you may also call to request the required application and instructions at 800-465-3203.

When gathering information for your application, be sure that you have the following:

  • SSN (or TIN if not eligible for SSN)
  • Practice Location Address and Phone Number
  • State License Information

And remember...Getting an NPI is free - not having one can be costly!
